Do you even know what real licorice tastes like?
Unless you have tried a licorice candy other than the recognized long twisted black and red sticks, you probably have not had the "real" thing. These candies are made from Anise flavoring, which has a similar taste to licorice but it is not even related.
Licorice is one of the most popular herbs in the world and it's name comes from the Greek meaning of "sweet root". It is a member of the pea family and the "glycyrrhizin" flavor is extracted from the root and it is 30-50 times sweeter than sugar.
Licorice has been used for thousands of years as a flavoring and for many different medicinal reasons. It is known today to fight and sooth heartburn, coughs, bronchitis, indigestion and nausea. In the early 1700's a seven year old chemist named George Dunhill, is reputed to create the first licorice sweet from the medicinal recipe. The sweets he created are known today as Pontefract cakes.
